SUN DANCING

Because of a poem
he drove ten hours to Maria’s for a margarita –
El Baile del Sol.
Then up to Chimayo for Leona’s tamales
because of a poem too.

The Cinema changed the silhouette of his life.
He became a sailor because of it.
Studied prehistory too.

Because of a dream he became a bird.
He rode the wind a million miles from his life,
sun dancing,
into arms of fur the color of crow feathers.
Discovering for the first time
sometimes reality transcends his dreams.

“She was simply who she was more so than anyone I had ever met.  Her world was a procession of aesthetic perceptions and considerations.  She knew the contents of my kind of world fairly well but had rejected them as insufficient to maintain life . . . I thought it was unlikely I’d ever again meet a woman who was so totally alive.”

“We talked then about how we think of ourselves as Americans but there are many worlds in the United States if you stray very far from the freeways and stay away from television.”
