HALF WAY DOWN

He used to work the cafeteria lines
A large man with office hands
But then he was gone

I’d see him walking across town
Always walking
Always talking to himself
And to the blackbirds in the mall parking lot

This morning
He was sitting on the rail of an overpass
Not talking
But watching the red sun rise above the traffic
He was wearing a yellow fluorescent shirt
As if to improve the odds
If he changed his mind
Half way down
