OKLA HUMMA

(Post-election 2016)

walking Soldier Creek

where they camped during the Indian Wars

when the water ran red with Indian blood

then chromium grey

to win the big war

but not anymore

life is abundant

even on this winter solstice

red

(okla is Choctaw for red)

the red of a red-tailed hawk

on a sortie from cedar to sycamore

the red of sandstone

beneath silver ice and green moss

white

noise

of red earth slipping lubricated

white noise

of cedar waxwings

tittering under a cottonwood’s skirt

(humma is Choctaw for people)

white people

good

to their kind

blue

the blue bird blue sky

a blue heron

one-legged on thin ice

red       state

white   lies

blue     tears
