I awoke as
the sun reddened the horizon
and saw a
squadron of white pelicans on the lake. I wondered, could this be? Pelicans
in Oklahoma? So I ran quickly to the water’s
edge, snapping a picture in poor light. I then
turned around
to see my elderly neighbor
snickering
at me from behind the Marlborough dangling from her lips. It was then I realized
I was wearing nothing but underwear and
cowboy boots. After recovering my dignity
I asked
my bird keeper brother-in-law about
the pelicans.
He said they sometimes migrate through here, even overwintering if they find
a particularly nice place to call home.
I guess this is that place.
