“ . . . hallelujah is the most impossible word in the language.  I can only say it to birds, fish, and dogs.”

“This year we have two gorgeous
yellow warblers nesting in the honeysuckle bush.
The other day I stuck my head in the bush.
The nestlings weigh one-twentieth of an ounce,
about the size of a honeybee.  We stared at
each other, startled by our existence.
In a month or so, when they reach the size
of bumblebees they’ll fly to Costa Rica without a map.”

“The tree . . . Like us they don’t see what’s coming.  They often rot from the inside out though it can take decades.”

-from the poem “Songs of Unreason” by Jim Harrison

“This morning I learned that we live and die as children to the core only carrying as a protective shell a fleshy costume made up mostly of old scar tissue from before we learned how to protect ourselves.”

-from the poem “River V” by Jim Harrison

“I've always been different with one foot over the line
Winding up somewhere one step ahead or behind
It ain't been so easy but I guess I shouldn't complain
I've always been crazy but it's kept me from going insane”

-from “I’ve Always Been Crazy” by Waylon Jennings
